Ah, the sweet scent of damp earth, the rustle of leaves underfoot, and the thrill of spotting a golden treasure amidst the underbrush—there’s nothing quite like mushroom foraging to make summer unforgettable. In our family, this cherished activity was affectionately dubbed “hunt for mushrooms,” or “охота за грибами” in Russian. Our most exhilarating expeditions occurred after a refreshing rain, followed by warm, sunny days—a combination that made the woods come alive with fungi.
One of my fondest memories is discovering a valley teeming with chanterelles, those delightful golden morsels we lovingly called “лисички” (pronounced “lee-SEE-chkee”), meaning “little foxes.” This term not only reflected their vibrant colour but also added a touch of whimsy to our foraging adventures. The joy of filling our baskets with these delectable finds was matched only by the warmth of family bonds strengthened in the heart of the forest.
This passion for foraging is more than just a hobby; it’s a tradition passed down through generations, connecting us to our roots and to each other. Now, as I venture into the woods with my own children, I see the same excitement in their eyes—the thrill of the hunt, the joy of discovery, and the shared stories that make these moments truly magical. Here’s to many more summers filled with the wonders of the forest!
